During Nicaragua’s national election of 1990, the government gave Middlesex, Vermont artist Sam Kerson a 14-foot high, 60-foot wide wall to paint at the Centro Deportivo de los Trabajadores Sandinistas (Sandinist Workers' Sports Center), basketball court. The subject was, “The Course of Youth”, and proceeded to depict with both humor and seriousness the various stages a young person might pass through to achieve a proper place in society.
First panel, Nicaraguans look at an album of photographs of Nazi concentration camp victims and embrace each other to symbolize alliance against all oppression. 4.5 m X 5.5 m
The central panel, the defense of cultural heritage: dance and theatre; Nicaraguan and FSLN flags; music, armed defense. 4.5 m X 11 m
the third and last panel depicts, shoemaking (local industry) and design and construction of houses; botanical resesarch (right); the dawning of the new age (center). 4.5 m X 5.5 m
